Religious communities in Western Bahr El-Ghazal have prioritized prayer as the only mechanism that can bring lasting peace at the border between South Sudan and Sudan.

An ecumenical committee headed by Catholic Justice and Peace commission in Wau organized a prayer for pace attended by more than five different Christian groups at St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, Voice of Hope reported.

Natalina Andrea Mabo, Wau Catholic Diocese Justice and Peace coordinator, said the ecumenical prayer aimed at contributing to border peace through prayers and not only food items.

She added that prayer is a powerful instrument and an effective mechanism for peace.

Episcopal Church Bishop Moses Deng told the congregation that true peace starts within individuals.

He said Christians are called to be peacemakers and they need to have peace in their hearts in order to fulfil their mission.

The ECS bishop added that God is the source of peace.

Bishop Deng said Christians should pray for peace within themselves, in the families, communities and among nations.

He explained that most of South Sudanese communities do not have peace among themselves as most do not co-exist peacefully with their close neighbours.

The committee for the ecumenical prayer was initiated to pray for peace ahead of the 2011 referendum.

The inter-Christian body is now organizing prayers for peace at the border between South Sudan and Sudan.
