FINANCE MINISTER PRESENTS 6.5 BILLION POUND BUDGET TO NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

The national finance and economic planning minister today present to the parliament the 6.4 billion-pound budget for the fiscal year 2012-2013 that starts on July 1.

Sixty percent of the budget goes to the army and rule of law sector.

Service delivery agencies like education, health, natural resources and infrastructure come at the bottom with only a 17 percent share of the budget.

Almost 3.2 billion will be spent in salaries.

Minister Kosti Manibe Ngai explained that the goal of the austerity budget was to reduce expenditure while maintaining core functions of the country that are in the South Sudan Development Plan.

He said the Plan stated that by 2014 it should have ensured a united and peaceful country, building strong foundations for good governance, economic prosperity and enhance quality of life for all.

Mr Manibe announced that money was allocated for ten projects prioritized in the budget, including a 40-Megawatt hydropower dam at Fula and the construction of 23 schools.

Mr Manibe added that 56 million Pounds are to run public universities for the full academic year.

The finance minister announced that 11 million Pounds were allocated for the 2013 Federation of East African Secondary Schools Sports Association games that will hosted in Juba.
