The Australian government has pledged to support South Sudan with technical expertise to develop the mining sector.

Tim Fischer, the Special Envoy to the Prime Minister of Australia, told journalists yesterday in Juba that his Government is committed to provide practical assistance to the new nation.

He explained that the support comes through short courses in mining to key personnel paid by the Australia Government and the support for two international initiatives towards transparency and development of mining industry.

Mr Fisher said South Sudan’s legislation on mining signals the country’s commitment towards responsible mining.

The legislation together with the use of English are two important attraction for Australian investors.

Mr Fisher added that Australia is ready to come to South Sudan because there are 240 Australian mining companies operating in Africa.
