The African Union has expressed concerns at the slow pace South Sudan and Sudan are implementing the Roadmap prepared by the AU Peace and Security Council and the UN Security Council resolution 2046.

The roadmap requires both countries to implement a series of steps to establish peace and security along their common border.

It includes cessation of hostilities, withdrawal of each country’s armed forces to their side of the border and ending support to rebels fighting against the other country.

The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union Jean Ping called for greater commitment from both Sudanese leaders in order to resolve the outstanding issues that are at the centre of the dispute between the two countries.

He said the moment is critical for South Sudan and Sudan.

Mr Ping said both countries should return to peace and cooperation to safeguard their stability and that of the whole region.

The AU said almost half way through the three months stipulated in the Roadmap, progress could have been more substantive than it has been.
