PRESIDENT REOPENS PARLIAMENT, WANTS MEDIA LAWS PASSED

The President of the Republic has opened today the second session of the National Legislature, calling on members of parliament to pass the long awaited three media laws.

Salva Kiir Mayardit told the joint session of the National Assembly and the Council of States that they have worked hard passing over 20 laws during the first session.

He called on the parliament to form the Peace and Reconciliation Commission that will work to bring harmony among the communities in the country.

The President told MPs to look into the Advocacy Bill and pass it into law to ensure a framework for development in South Sudan

President Kiir urged the parliament to also pass the Media laws immediately to protect the rights of journalists and media houses to operate in a favourable atmosphere.

He added that journalists need to receive the information that √É’it is supposed to be given.’

President Kiir said the three media laws will provide clear and easy guidance on what type of information can be made available to journalists in South Sudan.

The three media laws titled Right of Access to Information Bill, Media Authority Bill and Broadcasting Corporation Bill are waiting approval since 2009.
