IGAD, the Inter-governmental Authority on Development, wants South Sudan to succeed in conflict prevention and become a strong prosperous country.
IGAD Director for Conflict Early Warning and Response Mechanism, Martin Kimani, said today in Juba that peace in South Sudan affects peace in Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia.He said IGAD is in South Sudan to promote and build peace and integrate the country into IGAD’s peace building institutions in the region.
Dr Kimani added that IGAD focuses on conflict prevention early warning and response system in partnership with South Sudan Peace Commission and Civil Society organizations at all levels.
South Sudan Peace Commission Chairman Chuol Rambang Luoth said the country has many problems that require conflict early warning and response especially in the states bordering Sudan and in Jonglei.
Mr Rambang said conflicts reduced in Jonglei State due to early warning systems in place that protect lives and cattle and prevent child abduction.
He said South Sudan will become an active member of IGAD conflict early warning mechanism as the initiative is beneficial to the country.
IGAD Conflict Early Warning and Response Mechanism and South Sudan Peace Commission met today in Juba to consult on the development of the Conflict Early Warning and Response Strategy 2012 that was launched in May.
