Sleeping sickness is worsening in South Sudan and the disease has become a silent killer.

The alert comes from Abdinasir Abubakar, who heads the Communicable Diseases and Surveillance and Response at World Health Organization.

He told CRN that sleeping sickness spread is worrying and more than 2 million people in the border areas of Greater Equatoria are at risk of contracting the illness.

Dr Abibakar explained that the disease is endemic in the whole region of Equatoria.

He said sleeping sickness increased because NGOs that used to manage the disease left the area and many people refused the medical treatment for the ailment.
