The Government of South Sudan has appreciated the condemnation of the UN Security Council and the AU Peace and Security Council of Sudan’s aerial bombardments on South Sudan.

Government spokesperson Barnaba Marial Benjamin told the press this afternoon that South Sudan commended the UN and AU councils for their efforts to pressure Sudan to stop bombing the territories of South Sudan.

He said his government also appreciated UN and AU orders to Khartoum to withdraw its forces from Abyei and other contested areas.

Dr Marial added that there is no SPLA presence in Abyei because the SPLA withdrew from area last May.

He asked the international community to assist the AU mediators in order to provide some muscle to their work.

Dr Marial called on the international community to pressure President Omar Al Bashir of Sudan to return to the negotiating table with South Sudan in order to arrest the pending issues peacefully.

He said President Salva Kiir Mayardit was willing to extend a hand of peace to Mr Al Bashir and negotiate their differences amicably despite threats of war from Sudan.

Dr Marial was speaking a day after the international community, including UN Security Council, AU and the US, condemned Sudanese acts of aggression against South Sudan and appreciated Juba for withdrawing its forces from Panthou-Higlig.
