IOM, the International Organization for Migrations, announced that on Monday a barge convoy carrying 1,708 stranded returnees left Renk for Juba.
The convoy is made up of three passenger barges and four luggage barges.IOM said it is also speeding up the evacuation of returnees from Renk to Malakal by road.
Most returnees have been stranded at Renk, Upper Nile, for many months after arriving from the Sudan.
The majority are travelling to the greater Bahr el Ghazal region. Others are travelling to the capital, Juba and beyond.
IOM is also providing return assistance to a group of 1,300 South Sudanese who left Khartoum in late March in a convoy by road and became stranded in Panthou-Higlig, before being re-routed towards Renk.
The returnees are being taken to Malakal by road and they will fly to Aweil and Kuajok in Northern and Western Bahr el Ghazal State.
