The UN is ready to deploy troops at the borders between Sudan and South Sudan to calm the violence if they are welcomed by both governments.
The head of UNMISS, the UN Mission in South Sudan, Hilde Johnson told the press Monday that the UN Security Council established a border verification mechanism in December following a request by both countries. She added that the troops will be deployed as soon as the governments of Juba and Khartoum agreed to the arrangements.
Ms Johnson made these comments following Monday’s Sudanese air attack against civilian targets near Bentiu killing two people.
She condemned the bombing and called upon both countries to refrain from violence.
