The head of UNAMID, the joint African Union -United Nation Mission in Darfur, has express serious concerns over developments in Southern Darfur following attacks by armed movements on three towns this week.

Ibrahim Gambari said he was deeply concerned that armed movements are seeking to destabilize Darfur and undermine the precious peace which has been advancing in the region since the signing of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur.

On Tuesday, an armed group attacked Saysaban, in southwest Darfur, destroying a telecommunications tower and seizing fuel from the local market.

Later that day, another armed group seized the town of Um Dafok on the border with the Central African Republic.

The Minni Minnawi faction of Sudan Liberation Army and the Justice and Equality Movement claimed responsibility for the attacks.
