Two international Church organizations expressed grave concern over the escalating conflict between South Sudan and Sudan and called on both Governments to avoid further deterioration of the situation and declare a ceasefire.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) and the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) released a statement calling for mutual respect of territorial integrity.

The Church umbrella groups say they have followed with deep concern the developments that led to the occupation of Higlig by South Sudan and advocate for a just and peaceful resolution of the conflict starting with immediate ceasefire.

The WCC and the AACC deplored loss of life caused by the escalation of the conflict.

They called on both parties to resist from hardening of positions and resolve any differences through talks to resolve the border and all other outstanding issues.

The WCC and the AACC called upon the Government of Kenya, IGAD – the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the African Union and international community to double diplomatic efforts to help South Sudan and Sudan to reduce military campaigns and sit around the negotiations’ table.
