PRICES RISE AND RISE IN SOUTH SUDAN

Commodity prices continued their steady rise in South Sudan and from February to March they increased another two percent making ends meet even more difficult.

The National Bureau of Statistics says in its Consumer Price Index for South Sudan March 2012 that between February and March prices increased 3.4 percent in Malakal, 2.8 percent in Juba and 1.7 percent in Wau.

Comparing prices of March 2011 with March 2012, they skyrocketed 51.1 percent.

Food and non alcoholic beverages, health, and restaurant and hotels are responsible for the hike in the cost of living in South Sudan.

In one year, tobacco and alcoholic drinks went up 81.9 percent, food and soft drinks 47.1 percent and restaurants and hotel prices 34.9 percent.

The annual inflation rate increased from 42.4 percent in February to 50.9 percent in March.
