The Commissioner of Yei River County on Tuesday issued a local order banning chewing a leafy drug known as mairungi.
Commissioner Elia Waiwai told Radio Easter over a telephone interview today that the mairungi is one of the strongest substances that can disturb people’s minds. He said the order banning chewing the mairungi was endorsed by the county’s legislative council and it will be effectively implemented
Mr Waiwai explained that county security meeting this week deliberated on the issue of mairungi.
He said he has ordered the police and the security forces to implement the decision and that some mairungi dealers were arrested yesterday and they will be sent to court.
Mr Waiwai added that the people who commit crimes at night are those who consume mairungi because the drug makes them sleepless.
He appealed to the citizens to create jobs for themselves and stop wasting time chewing mairungi.
He added strict border control will avert the infiltration of the mairungi from the neighbouring countries.
