A group of MPs from the National Legislative Assembly today launched the first Parliamentary Lobby Group for Children Rights in the new republic.
The launching was held at the main hall of the National Assembly under the theme “Speak out and act for children’s rights in South Sudan.”Chairperson of the Parliamentarian Lobby Group, Mary Nawai, said children in the country have constitutional rights to sue lawmakers when they do not respect the laws made to protect children’s rights.
She said there are hundreds of children in the streets today without any protection and proper care and nobody was concern about their issues.
Ms Mawai added that the children in the streets of ten states of South Sudan are washing ministers and MPs’ cars, cleaning their shoes for some pounds in order to survive.
She said some children beg while others are selling northern traders in goods like sweets in return of few pounds.
The group of the parliamentarians will be speaking on children’s behalf and advocate for respect of their rights.
