Khartoum has violated the agreement it signed with Juba last Friday on non aggression and cooperation by stopping barges carrying South Sudanese from Kosti to South Sudan.

Defence Deputy Minister Majak D’Agot Atem told CRN during today’s Media Forum that Khartoum’s decision to stop barges transporting South Sudanese from Kosti was a clear violation of the memorandum of understanding on non aggression signed last Friday in Addis Ababa.

He said the agreement requests each country to refrain from blockading agreed passage corridors, ports, coastlines, rivers or air space according to international law.

Dr D’Agot added the government will raise a complaint about the violation when the Joint Political and Security Mechanism meets and to the AU mediators.

He said if the signatories committed to implementing the clauses in the memorandum it would help de-escalate tensions along the border and improve the mutual relations between the two countries.

Dr D’Agot added that relations between Sudan and South Sudan are unstable since Khartoum confiscated South Sudan’s oil.

The Deputy Minister added that Khartoum is using its militias to carry out hostile actions in the border.

He said Sudanese troops occupied Babala, a town in Western Bahr El Ghazal state, and bombed Jaw, in Unity State.
