The University of Bahr El Ghazal is making efforts to find a solution for the dispute over languages of instruction that led some students to suspend classes and create tension in the campus.
On Thursday morning some second year Arabic stream students in the College of Economics marched into the hall and interrupted lectures in protest for lack of lecturers in Arabic, Radio Voice of Hope reported. In the previous years, Arabic and English stream students were attending lectures at separate places with lectures in both languages.
This year, the university administration implemented the government’s policy to use only English as means of instruction.
College of Economics acting dean Guot Konpiny Muorter said lecturers will teach and give notes in English, with some explanations in Arabic if they are able.
He explained that currently there are no Arabic speaking lecturers available in Wau.
Mr Konpiny said it was important that all students knew both English and Arabic.
He added that the University is looking for some part time Arabic speaking lecturers to assist the Arabic stream group.
Mr Konpiny advised second, third and fourth year students to face the language challenges with courage.
He added that first year students will have classes only in English.
The University of Bahr El Ghazal lacks lecture halls and professors since many left for Khartoum.
The College of Medicine is still without lectures although the calendar and time table for lectures are out since two weeks ago.
