Inmates at Torit Prison received a donation of footwear and mats from Eastern Equatoria state ministry of culture and social development.
Acting Director for Child Welfare in the Ministry of Culture and Social Development, Oting Elizio, delivered the goods yesterday, Radio Emmanuel reported. He said the shoes were for juveniles, female inmates and children in detention with their mothers.
Mr Oting disclosed that the ministry has written proposals for more assistance to help children in detention.
Director for Torit Prison, Lieutenant Colonel Monday Asaria, says children and babies in the prison with their mothers require more help.
He added that the children and babies are being kept in prisons for humanitarian motives to be with their mothers.
He explained that the law does not allow innocent children to be in prison.
Mr Asaria, who is new in Torit prison, said bedding facilities at the female wing need to be improved.
He called on well-wishers and non-governmental organizations to assist the institution with contributions to improve the conditions of the innocent children and babies.
The prison chief urged relatives and individuals to visit inmates to offer social, spiritual and psychological help.
Mr Asaria said the prison has changed from a no-go-zone for outsiders, to an institution that needs the support of everyone in order to reform people into better citizens.
