Hunger and poverty are the new enemies South Sudan has to fight after getting its independence from the Arabs.

This is the view of Eastern Equatoria caretaker minister of Agriculture, Forestry, Cooperatives and Rural Development, Jerome Surur Gama, Radio Emmanuel reported.

He called on every citizen to engage in farming and use all the available pieces of land, even in town areas, as hunger and poverty threaten the country.

Mr Surur asked political, religious and administrative leaders to encourage people to return to farming through their own example as people of the land.

The caretaker minister advised people to invest their salaries in food production instead of drinking.

South Sudan council of ministers on Friday passed a number of resolutions in a bid to bridge the food gap threatening the nation.

The Cabinet decided that farmers should be assisted with fuel and extra training in mechanized agriculture to expand their production with the assistance of cooperatives and agricultural banks.
