The humanitarian situation in Jonglei remains terrible following the recent inter-tribal conflicts in the most violent state in South Sudan.

The UN Under-Secretary- General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Valerie Amos briefed the press yesterday in Juba about the humanitarian situation in Jonglei following recent clashes between Murle and Lou-Nuer communities.

She visited Bor, Pibor and Walgak and said people lost loved ones, possession and livelihood.

Ms Amos added that the UN and its partners are working hard to meet the basic needs of those affected by the inter-tribal conflict.

She explained that many affected areas are remote and can only be reached by air and it makes aid delivery complex and expensive.

Ms Amos said the UN has no choice but to reach Jonglei quickly.

She said more aids workers are needed on the ground as soon as possible to assist the needy.

Ms Amos said inter-communal violence is old in Jonglei and last year alone there were 208 conflicts were reported in the state.

She lamented that humanitarian buildings were specifically targeted during the clashes with the loss of critical supplies that slowed down reliefs operations.

Ms Valerie referred that the situation in South Sudan is extremely precarious, and the risk of a dangerous decline is very real.

She added that if the oil production in completely turned off, the Government and its partners will not be able to meet the basic humanitarian needs of the population.
