The last round for polio vaccination came to an end on Friday with thousands of children under the age of five immunised against polio.
The fourth and last round started on the 13th of this month across the country. It was sponsored by UNICEF, World Health Organization, Ministry of Health and other heath partners.Talking to CRN News, Bismark Swangin, UNCEF communications officer, said vaccinators moved from house to house immunizing all children at the age of five against polio.
He added that although there have been some logistical challenges in some parts of South Sudan, UNICEF is optimistic that the targeted number of 3.5 million children to be vaccinated will be achieved.
Mr. Swangin said as long as the country has not been declared polio free, it is still at risk of the polio virus. He noted that the last case of polio was detected in 2009 but some neighbouring countries like Congo, Uganda and Chad still have polio cases.
He added that UNICEF provided the remote areas with storage systems.
