Lakes State Legislative Assembly Speaker has made a move to dispel any fears of sharp divisions among Members of Parliament regarding the state’s Transitional Constitution.
The move by Speaker John Marik Makur follows an incident on Monday afternoon when one MP was suspended from the House, and two others opted to walk out during a debate on an ad hock committee’s report on the Lakes State Transitional Constitution.Speaker Marik told Good News Radio that there was no reason for any quarrel because the two members had chances to express their opinion both at the committee and in parliament.
He added that their conduct was aimed at disrupting the House proceedings.
Speaker Marik assured members of the public that the Legislative Assembly is united, urging MPs to avoid quarrels when their opinions are overruled.
He added that the House is going on with its businesses with energy and ambition to contribute towards the welfare of the State.
He defended his decision to suspend Joseph Manyuat from the House service for a period of seven days for gross misconduct.
Speaker Marik said there is no sanction for MPs walking out during the Assembly’s sittings.
He added that it is up to the SPLM to take disciplinary action since the two MPs were elected in the party’s lists.
Speaker Marik cautioned MPs against taking personal interests to the floor of the House during important debates on issues of public interest.
