A Catholic nun in the Diocese of Rumbek has expressed concern over the rate at which girls in are dropping out of school due to early marriage and premarital pregnancies.

Sr. Ann Farren, who teaches at Loreto Girls Secondary School in Rumbek, however noted that the trend is gradually changing and that the community is now aware that girls are able to do better than boys in school.

Sr. Ann expressed her confidence that parents will continue to allow their daughters to pursue education.

She made these comments during a graduation ceremony of eight of the 20 girls expected to sit for their final examination this year.

Sr. Ann said the graduation of the eight girls is part of God’s dream for the girls of South Sudan that they are educated in their home country.

She expressed hope to expand the school by increasing the number of streams so that many girls can be enrolled in future.

Sr. Ann urged the girls to keep trying in order to be the best people that they can be spiritually, academically and emotionally.
