An official from the University of Juba urged the President of the Republic to assist in the construction of Bilinyang Campus, and asked for the former JIU barracks in Gyada to be freed for the university to jumpstart the current academic year.
The chairman of University of Juba Council, Clement Janda, asked Salva Kiir Mayardit to grant the necessary support for the university to start the academic year in a few weeks. He added that the government should give the military barracks used by former Joint Integrated Units, locally known as White House, for the university.
The university did not start the current academic year due to lack of space for more than 4,000 university students who returned from Khartoum.
Canon Janda urged the community around the university to build hostels for the students.
President Kiir promised that his government will construct modern structures in all the universities in South Sudan in order to meet international standards.
He said it was important that students got their degrees locally.
These statements were made today at Atlabara Campus during the University of Juba Independence celebration.
