The Catholic Archbishop of Juba has appointed a Comboni Missionary as the diocese of Rumbek administrator.

The Episcopal see of Rumbek became vacant following the sudden death of Bishop Caesar Mazzolari on July 16.

Archbishop Paolino Lukudu Loro wrote a letter addressed to the clergy, religious and faithful of the diocese of Rumbek, appointing Fr. Fernando Colombo as the diocesan administrator until the Holy Father chooses a new bishop for the diocese, Good News Radio reported.

Archbishop Lukudu explains that Fr. Colombo fulfils all the conditions required to serve as diocesan Administrator.

The Comboni priest was transferred from Rumbek to Juba a few weeks ago and he served as Rumbek’s Vicar General.

The Archbishop notes that Fr. Colombo has expressed the wish to govern the diocese in very close cooperation with some diocesan priests, calling upon the priests to understand and be generous to cooperate.

Archbishop Lukudu, in conclusion, calls on all priests, religious and faithful of Rumbek diocese to keep the spirit of the Gospel that shuns discouragement.

He added that mother Church is very close around them and is praying for them.

Fr. Colombo, aged 77, arrived today in Rumbek.

On Tuesday, he will hold meetings with priests and religious women and men.
