A peacekeeper was killed and a second seriously injured in Darfur when their vehicle carrying five troops came under heavy fire.

UNAMID, the UN-African Mission in Darfur, said in a media briefing that the attack took place in South Darfur in Duma Village, 37 kilometres northeast of Nyala.

Government police transported the victims to a hospital in Nyala.

UNAMID official Aichatou Mindaoudou Souleymane said the attack on the peacekeepers is deplorable.

He added that UNAMID is doing all it can to render treatment to the injured, and, with the Sudanese police, to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

The identity of the four attackers is not known.

Police and UNAMID are searching the area.

Thirty UNAMID personnel have died due to hostile action since UNAMID was deployed on 31 December 2007.
