A militia leader operating in Unity and Warrap states has accepted a presidential pardon and called for the integration of his forces into the national army.

Peter Gadet, who started his rebellion last April when he published the Mayom Declaration, has accepted Salva Kiir Mayardit’s amnesty.

Mr. Gadet’s spokesman Bol Gatkuoth told SCR News that the cries of South Sudanese enticed the militia leader to accept Mr. Kiir’s amnesty and sign a ceasefire with the SPLA.

He added that the ceasefire is an answer to President Kiir’s appeal to peace and reconciliation during the independence celebrations.

Mr. Bol added that the death of Gatluak Gai created havoc and fear that it might spark fresh fighting in South Sudan.

He added that their ceasefire is meant to prove that they will not engage in any violence due to Mr. Gatluak’s death.

President Kiir offered an amnesty to all rebel leaders operating in South Sudan during his speech on Independence Day.
