An official of Lakes State government has decried unequal distribution of resources in South Sudan and called for renewed efforts to overcome disparities.
Nhial Enock Chawoch is the Deputy Speaker of Lakes State Legislative Assembly. He told participants at Martyrs’ Day celebration in Rumbek that the martyrs sacrificed their lives for the freedom of South Sudan to improve the lives of all South Sudanese.Illustrating the levels of poverty in the community, he said Rumbek alone has over 240 registered street children.
He added that the State has the second highest maternity death rate.
Mr. Nhial attributed these realities to unequal distribution of resources, arguing that in South Sudan, the rich are getting richer at the expenses of the poor.
The Deputy Speaker gave some examples of the gap between the rich and the poor.
He said rich families take their children abroad where they have access to better education, health care and better living standards.
He added that the children of some of the martyrs and other poor families languish in despicable situations in South Sudan.
Mr. Nhial decried the situation in many schools in South Sudan where teachers are demoralized due to poor pay.
He said the available health facilities are deteriorating by the day.
The Republic of South Sudan has the uphill task of establishing new educational, health and infrastructural facilities.
