The Kapure community, near the dumping site along the Juba-Yei road, is surviving on leftovers and collecting scrap metals to sell for few pounds in order to make a living.
SCR News went to the dumpsite this morning and talked with some people scrapping a living out of waste.Moses Anthony, a father of three, has been collecting scrap metals and tins for one year. He said in a good day he makes about 150 kilos of metal that he sells for one pound per four kilos.
Mr. Anthony added that the 37 pounds he makes are enough for two cups of flour and a kilo of sugar.
Mr. Anthony explained that Ugandan buyers used to pay 50 to 100 for a pile of metal. Now they buy it by the kilo because they complained they lost money when they sold the metal scraps to a factory in Jinja.
John Sule, farther of three, produces charcoal.
He said the whole area is suffering with no medicine, no school for kids and no food.
He added that children are feeding on leftovers from the dumpsite.
Mr. Sule urged the government to move the dumping site away from Kapure and provide food, dig boreholes, build schools and health centres for the people.
