The police yesterday arrested the Deputy Director of Rumbek 98 FM radio station, following instructions of Lakes State Minister for Information.
Peter Maliap told Good News Radio at Rumbek Police Station that officers came for him at the station at 10 a.m. claiming that they were acting under the directives of the State Minister for Information.Mr. Maliap who had been at the police station for two and a half hours said the Director of Police had not received any charges against him.
Mr. Maliap added that he was joined by his colleagues from the station in a show of solidarity.
He described his arrest as a surprise.
He went on to say that the Minister for Information who instructed his arrest was aware that he was at the police station.
He added that there was not any official statement about the reasons for his arrest.
Reporter Mabor Rac expressed solidarity with his colleague.
He hinted that the problem is administrative and its solution does not necessarily have to involve the police.
Good News Radio tried to talk with the Minister for Information but failed since the he was in a meeting with the Director of the station most of Friday afternoon.
Later, Manyang Mayom, the director of Rumbek 98 FM, said his deputy was no longer in police custody.
He added that Mr. Maliap was not arrested, just invited to go to the police station.
Mr. Mayom admitted that there are administrative issues at the station.
He expressed optimism that the Minister for Information is taking care of those issues.
