A UN adviser on prevention of genocide urged the government of South Sudan to promote inclusivity in order to create a strong national identity.
Francis Deng advises the UN Secretary General on genocide prevention. Yesterday he gave a public lecture in Juba.He explained that the crisis of identity and failure to manage diversity since independence in the Sudan led to many challenges.
He said independent South Sudan must correct the mistakes of the past by adopting a national identity framework that promotes inclusivity, equality and dignity of all ethnic groups without discrimination.
Dr. Deng added that South Sudan has fought for so long for the ideals that it is now called to respect by building a system that manages diversity and follows principles of democracy and good governance and respect for fundamental rights.
He said the new country must pursue equitable socio economic development and promote gender equality.
Dr. Deng described these as essential elements of the new Sudan vision that South Sudan should offer to whole of Sudan.
He added that the leaders in South Sudan are challenged to live up to the commitments they made the long years of struggle for independence.
