A number of children are involved in stone crushing activities at Jebel Korok, popularly known as Jebel Kujur, in Juba, to cater for their school expenses.

Bakhita Radio caught up with Lemio, a nine-year old boy who crashes stones in order to buy a pair of black shoes and white socks.

He said his parents cannot afford to pay for his school uniform.

He added that he was waiting to sell a trip of stones before going back to school.

Sarah Eijo, a 42-year old mother of five, said she pays Lemio one pound per bucket of crushed stones.

She said she allowed Lemio to work for her to help him get some money for the school.

Lodor Joseph, 16, said he lost both parents and has to struggle to pay his school fees all by himself.

He said he suspended his studies for one year in order to make some money for his education.

Both Lemio and Lodor work for a service provider who pays them one pound per one full bucket of crushed stones.

The same full bucket of stones is sold for five pounds.

The employer gets a profit of four pounds.
