The UN and Khartoum are disagreeing about the presence of Sudanese troops in the Abyei area.

The UN says SAF forces should leave Abyei immediately since Ethiopia started deploying peacekeepers in the region.

However, SAF says it won’t leave until the Ethiopian deployment is complete.

The head of UN peacekeeping chief Alain Le Roy said during a briefing last week in New York all forces in Abyei were to withdraw by the first deployment of UN troops.

SAF spokesman Sawarmi Khaled Saad told AFP that the army will not redeploy from Abyei until the full Ethiopian force is in place.

So far some 500 out of 4,300 Ethiopian troops have arrived in Abyei.
