The head of UN Mission in South Sudan opens a two-day seminar this morning in Juba on genocide prevention and mass atrocities.
Hilde F. Johnson, who is also the representative of UN chief Ban Ki-moon in South Sudan, said the workshop will help the participants to acquire knowledge to support the development of policies, institutions and legal framework to prevent mass atrocities.She said the good relationship between South Sudan and Sudan and the performance of the government of the new republic to protecting civilians and engage in mitigating conflict will make the whole question of preventing genocide irrelevant.
The seminar is organized by the UN office on prevention of genocide and mass atrocities in collaboration with office of High Commissioner for Human Rights.
It brings together people working with UN agencies, government officials and civil society.
