The President of the Republic refused to accept the resignation handed in by the minister for Peace and CPA Implementation who also serves as the SPLM Secretary General.

Pagan Amum Okiech told the press today that he resigned because South Sudan achieved independence and he would like to give his contribution to the development of national awareness and unity.

He added that President Salva Kiir and other SPLM leaders refused his resignation so that he can continue to spearhead the on-going post-independence arrangements with the Sudan.

There were speculations that Mr. Amum recently differed with president Kiir over non specified issues.

Mr. Amum dismissed the speculations saying the party is as united as ever.

The minister said he will continue to serve with zeal and dedication to meet the trust bestowed upon him by the party leadership.

President Kiir on Saturday presided over the swearing in of Mr. Amum as caretaker minister for Peace.

He keeps also his post as SPLM Secretary General.
