More than 1,900 returnees are stranded at Shambe near Yirol where they arrived on the eve of Independence Day and are still awaiting transportation to different areas within Lakes State.
This was revealed on Monday by Lakes State Southern Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission Deputy Director, Isaac Karkon Alajabo to Good News Radio.Mr. Karkon said a total of 453 households made it to Shambe Port on July 8, 2011,
Three returnees died along the journey.
He clarified that one of the three died of dehydration caused by “watery diarrhea” while the other two drowned after falling into the Nile River.
Mr. Karkon said some of the returnees will be settled in Yirol East, Yirol West, and Greater Rumbek Counties of Lakes State, while others will go to Warrap, Northern Bahr El Ghazal and Western Bahr El Ghazal States.
He also revealed that over 1,500 of the returnees will be resettled in Greater Yirol, while greater Rumbek County will resettle just over 200 returnees.
Mr. Karkon underscored the challenges his office is facing in dealing with the returnees.
He cited lack of transport for the enumerators who were to go to Shambe Port to get the details about the returnees.
