The Catholic Bishops in the Sudan have written a message urging the two republics to be positive and build strong statehoods.
The Catholic bishops of Khartoum and El Obeid said the partition of the Sudan into two sovereign states was a difficult process. They added that the people of both the Republic of the Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan have to build a new relationship and respond positively to the new situations.
They urged the faithful to continue to pray for the completion of a peaceful transition process in the two republics and for a political settlement for the outstanding issues under negotiations.
The bishops added that the Church in the Sudan needs serious programs of renewal with pastoral initiatives to foster vocations, formation of new catechists and Christian family education.
They said they hope for a positive solution for the peoples of Southern Kordofan and Abyei who are suffering violence related to their political aspirations.
They greeted the peace agreement inked by the government and the Darfur Liberation and Justice Movement in Doha, the Qatari capital.
The message issued today was signed by Cardinal Gabriel Zubeir Wako, Archbishop of Khartoum and President of the Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference; Auxiliary Bishop Daniel Adwok Kur of Khartoum; and Co-adjutor Bishop Michael Didi Adgum of El-Obeid.
