SOUTH SUDAN UN’S NEWEST MEMBER

The Republic of South Sudan is the newest member of the United Nations.

The UN General Assembly yesterday admitted the Republic of South Sudan as member number 193.

Vice-president Riek Machar Teny led a South Sudanese delegation to witness the membership.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the world gathered to welcome South Sudan to the community of nations.

Mr. Ban pledged the UN’s assistance as the country shapes its future.

He added that the commitment of all UN’s Member States is keyl as South Sudan moves forward.

Joseph Deiss, the Swiss who currently presides at UN General Assembly, said South Sudan’s membership to the UN marks a historic” moment for Africa and for the world community.
