The UN has pledged that it will support the Republic of South Sudan to meet its many responsibilities.
UN official in Lakes State Renuka Chidambaram told the corwd gathering at Rumbek’s Freedom Square that the UN is committed to assisting the Republic of South Sudan to meet its many responsibilities, and that the partnership will focus on building institutions. However, she encouraged the new Republic to develop partnerships with other organizations besides the UN.
Ms. Chidambaram cited high maternal mortality rate, illiteracy, poverty, insecurity and infrastructural underdevelopment as some of the main challenges the new Republic of South Sudan faces.
She encouraged the leaders of the new Republic to reach out to their counterparts in the North to resolve the outstanding issues by focusing on long term benefits of working in partnership rather than short term gains at each other’s expense.
Some disputed areas along the border and other issues are still under negotiations with the North by both parties in Addis Ababa.
