The president of the UN General Assembly said the world organization is ready to welcome South Sudan as its newest member.
Joseph Deiss said the independence of South Sudan was a remarkable achievement adding that it stands as an example to the rest of the world for a peaceful settlement of conflicts.He added that peace and stability in South Sudan will have positive effects to the entire continent.
Mr. Deiss said the UN is looking forward to welcome South Sudan as its youngest member.
He added that the general Assembly will proceed swiftly to the necessary steps for full membership of South Sudan after recommendation of the UN Security Council.
Mr. Deiss made these statements during his speech at the Proclamation of Independence in Juba on Saturday.
