The Pope’s special envoy to South Sudan’s Declaration of Independence called on the politicians in the Republic of South Sudan to place public interest before personal significance.

The archbishop of Nairobi, Cardinal John Njue, told the congregation yesterday at Saint Theresa’s Cathedral in Juba that the citizens elected leaders because they trusted them.

He appealed to the political leadership to fulfil the trust placed upon them by the voters.

He said leaders are accountable for their acts.

Cardinal Njue reiterated his call to the leaders to be instruments of peace and avoid confrontation because it causes destruction.

The prelate urged every citizen to contribute for the development of the new Republic of South Sudan.

He said every citizen is created for the purpose to contributing to the growth of humanity.

Cardinal John Njue made these statements yesterday during his homily at the Thanksgiving Mass for the independence of South Sudan organized by the archdiocese of Juba.
