Salva Kiir Mayardit unveiled a bronze statue of John Garang de Mabior on Saturday immediately before starting the declaration of independence programme.
The gigantic statue attracted many of Garang’s supporters who as soon as the programme of independence concluded flocked to the monument to pay their tribute.Amid tears, Roda Mona Majuk, said Garang was the founder of South Sudan’s independence.
David Mayen said Garang was greater than Mohammed and Jesus and he deserves all the respect from the people of south Sudan.
An anonymous citizen said Garang gave the people of South Sudan good life, freedom and independence.
With a beard, bulky physique, a book and a stick in each hand, the statue appears just like the late Garang.
Dr. Garang, who spent 21 years fighting for south Sudan, was killed in a plane crash in July 30, 2005, six months after signing the CPA that granted the region a referendum which resulted into independence.
With his mausoleum and now a statue in Juba, Dr. Garang will remain a hero and founder of the Republic of south Sudan.
