Yei residents today joined the whole South Sudanese nation to celebrate its independence.

The celebration started at 9 AM with a parade of marching soldiers and school children from Christ the King Cathedral to Freedom Square, Easter Radio reported.

Traditional dancers, teachers and medical staff from Yei National Training Institute also took part in the march.

Thousands were already gathered at the square when the parade arrived.

During the lowering of the Sudan flag, a black goat was slaughtered at the foot of the mast to symbolize that the flag of Sudan will not be hoisted again.

When the flag of the Republic of South Sudan was raised people chanted and slaughtered a white goat.
