The UN Security Council yesterday voted unanimously to set up a new mission to help the Republic of South Sudan consolidate peace and lay the foundation for longer-term state-building, conflict prevention and economic development.
Resolution 1996 establishes the UN Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) for an initial period of one year.Hilde Johnson of Norway heads the new Mission.
UNMISS will have up to 7,000 military personnel and 900 civilian police personnel as well as a civilian component.
