Pibor County Commissioner says cattle rustling clashes between Lou Nuer and Murle communities have killed 900 people and wounded more than 200 while hundreds of displaced families are in dire need of food and medical assistance.

Commissioner Akot Maze Adikir told SCR News over the phone from Pibor in a remote area of Jonglei state that the security situation is now calm after the attackers took the cattle and left.

He said many people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance after their houses and properties were burned during the clashes in three payams.

He added that displaced people need shelter, food and medicines.

Mr. Maze said the authorities are distributing some food that was in a WFP store.

He added that it was not enough for the people in need.

Mr. Maze said over 900 people were killed and more than 200 wounded in the clashes.

The commissioner added that there is no communication between him and the government in Juba due to the preparation for the independence celebration.

Two NGOs operating in the area were evacuated immediately after the clashes started.
