The people of South Sudan have been invited to prepare for independence by sharing the previous evening meal with their neighbours to make memory of the long road to freedom.
Yesterday, GoSS spokesman Barnaba Marial Benjamin endorsed the initiative that is part of the Catholic Bishops’ programme of preparation for the independence.Fr. Nicholas Kiri, who heads the Juba Archdiocesan taskforce for the independence celebrations, told SCR News that the bishops invited all the people of South Sudan to reach out to one another and share the last supper before the independence in fraternity.
He said July 8’s supper should be eaten together with the neighbours as a sign of solidarity and of passover from slavery to freedom.
Fr. Kiir added that during the shared candle-lit supper every participant should tell his or her own stories of suffering and welcome the light.
The cleric invited all Southerners to take part in the initiative, Christians, Muslims and followers of traditional religions alike, to prepare together to welcome the new nation.
Fr. Kiir said South Sudan needs the energy and commitment of every citizen in order to become a nation.
