Lakes State launched the National Anthem Choir on Saturday at Rumbek’s Freedom square, with students from Rumbek schools and Church groups singing together South Sudan’s national anthem.

Chairperson of South Sudan National Anthem in Lakes State, Stephen Peter Ufo, told Good News Radio that the over 200-member choir from different groups of students, teachers and civil servants was ready to sing the national hymn.

He said he looked forward to a new nation that will be great, peaceful and with citizens willing to cooperate.

Some students talked about their preparedness and dreams for the independence celebration.

Helen Chagai Matueny, a pupil at Rumbek Girls Primary School aged 18, said she is rehearsing the national anthem in order to teach it to children in other schools.

24-year old Mary Akon Deng, a student at Rumbek Senior Secondary School, said she is fattening a goat and a cock for the big day to share with her family, friends, school mates, and neighbours.

Petro Mangar Beidong, 18, from Rumbek Secondary School, said he dreams of a South Sudan that can be compared to other countries across the world with good educational and health facilities.

The South Sudan National Anthem, chosen through a competition of 49 entries by musicians, poets and academicians, reflects the unity, identity, national resources and the liberation struggle of the South Sudanese.
