POLICE AND COMMUNITY HAVE TO DIALOGUE ON SECURITY

The police and community activists said there is a crucial need for dialogue between law enforcing agents and civil society to create communication links in order to solve security issues in South Sudan.

James Hitler, head of information for Community Empowerment for progress organization, told SCR News that there was a strong need to create open dialogue between the citizens and the Police for the sake of security and law and order in all communities.

He said a study done by his group revealed that insecurity incidents that occurred in Juba were caused by police.

Mr. Hitler added that it was important for police and citizens to engage in dialogue to address insecurity issues.

James Khor Choul, a Policeman from Upper Nile state, said police faces many challenges including communities’ lack of cooperation.

He said maintaining law and order needs joint efforts between community and police.

Mr. Chuol added communities are not ready sometimes to give information that can identify criminals.

Some 35 participants from police and civil society activist are on a three-day Police Community Dialogue workshop in Juba.
