Eastern Equatoria minister of Education, Science and Technology blamed the spate of violence in the state on the high rate of illiteracy in South Sudan.

Michael Lopuke Lotyam asserted that the sporadic violence and cattle raids are due to the civil war, where over 90 per cent of the population of the state missed the opportunity of acquiring life skills.

The minister stressed that the youth engage in violent means of earning a living because they were unable to get skills to integrate into national economy.

Mr. Lopuke emphasized the need for the government to identify the problem facing the youth and come up with programmes that can help them become useful to the new nation.

The minister was talking to Radio Emmanuel in reaction to a recent arrest of two young men and the recovery of over 20 heads of cattle by the state security forces.
