The Catholic Diocese of Rumbek is launching this Sunday a prayer and instruction program called “Ten Steps to Unity in South Sudan”, a ten-week long spiritual programme leading to Independence Day.

Bishop Caesar Mazzolari told Good News Radio that the ten steps stand for the ten Sundays between May 1 and Independence Day, on July 9.

He said each of the ten Sundays will have a special theme to prepare people to take part in the building of their new nation by becoming more participative in the society and in the Church.

Bishop Mazzolari said the programme will have two main activities: prayer and instructions.

He added that the diocese prepared ten instructions to be given by priests during Sunday homilies.

He added that the themes include forgiveness, common good, sense of responsibility and human rights.

Bishop Mazzolari explained that during the week people will meet in groups to discuss twelve themes taken from the Social Teachings of the Church using a booklet both in English and Dinka to guide their discussion.

The ten themes were prepared by Fr. Bernard Mallia, a Jesuit priest serving in Rumbek.

Gena Sheller prepared the 12 themes for discussion groups during her service at the department of Justice and Peace in 2007.
